Olen ryhmänohjaajana vetänyt alla olevan positiivisuusharjoituksen yleensä kakkosluokan ekana koulupäivänä. Luen mukuloille oheisen tekstin ja sitten kaikki kirjoittavat paperille kaikista luokkatovereista positiivisimman asian, jonka heistä voivat sanoa. Kerään paperit ja koostan jokaiselle oman version muiden antamista lausunnoista.

“When each person in a group is given a list of the positive things said about them by the others, this can have immense long-term value in enhancing feelings of self-esteem.

A young maths teacher in a junior high school was dealing with a stressed and frustrated group of pupils, who were carping at each other. She asked the pupils to take some blank paper and to list the names of the other pupils, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to write down the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates.

The teacher subsequently wrote the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper and listed what the pupils had said about that individual. The exercise was never mentioned again, but it had accomplished its purpose. The pupils felt better about themselves and each other and realised that their qualities were appreciated.

Years later, at the funeral of one of her ex-pupils who died in Vietnam, the teacher was told by the parents that the young man had been carrying in his wallet the list of all the good things his classmates had said about him. It transpired that the other ex-pupils at the funeral had also saved and treasured their lists. “That’s when I finally sat down and cried,” writes the teacher. “The lesson my former students taught me that day became a standard in every class I taught for the rest of my teaching career.”
